HONG KONG ELECTS TO BUY MORE FINE AND RARE WINE AT ACKER MERRALL’S NOVEMBER HK AUCTION

Hong Kong, SAR – January 16th, 2017 – 111 World Records fell along with an estimated HK$42M/US$5.5M at Acker Merrall’s first auction of 2017, led by a very strong day for Domaine de la Romanee Conti and Jean-Marc Roulot, as well as six other Domaine direct consignments from some of Burgundy’s finest producers.  An unprecedented twenty-one of the twenty-five Top Lots were from DRC with the “RC RC,” Romanee Conti itself, almost running the Top Ten table with eight of the Top Ten lots. The day’s Top Lot was a tie between a six bottle OWC of 1999 Romanee Conti that sold for HK$938,600/US$121,110 along with a case of 1999 Jayer Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux for the same price.  The next top lots were six bottle OWCs of 2010 and 2009 Romanee Conti selling for HK$741,000/US$95,613 and HK$ $691,600/US$89,239 respectively, while OWCs of DRC La Tache and DRC Montrachet grabbed eight Top 25 “wins,” as did three DRC Assortments in OWC: 1999, 2001 and 2007.

Equal to the demand from collectors for DRC was the strong performance of direct consignments from seven of Burgundy’s top Domaines, led by the wines of Jean-Marc Roulot. Collectors competed fiercely for the thirty-four lot consignment from Roulot, which was comprised of library wines from his most famous Meursault vineyards, as well as wines from the superb parcels he has recently made in Chevalier Montrachet, Corton Charlemagne and Puligny Montrachet Les Caillerets.  The results for Roulot were spectacular, with his wines from Meursault Perrieres exceeding the prices for most Montrachets in the market today, with all of Roulot’s lots soaring above the pre-auction high estimate. Three magnums of 2007 Roulot Meursault Perrieres sold for HK$69,160/US$8,924, two magnums of 1996 Roulot Meursault Perrieres were bought for HK$49,400/US$6,374 and three magnums of 2005 Roulot Meursault Charmes brought HK$27,170/US$3,506, while a Jeroboam of 2014 Chevalier Montrachet fetched HK$37,050/US$4,781.    In addition, there were large format selections from the cellars of Fourrier, Hudelot-Noellat, Lamarche, Lignier, Duroche and Clos de la Chapelle that were eagerly snapped up by thirsty connoisseurs seeking out these rising stars in Burgundy.

“What an auction!  DRC and Roulot rightfully dominated, along with Jayer and Leroy, and Hong Kong let us know loudly and clearly that the Year of the Rooster will be a great one for fine and rare wine.  Having seven of Burgundy’s most skilled winemakers bring special lots directly from their cellars for us to offer set the stage for an amazing day for Burgundy, and while Burgundy took most of the headlines, Bordeaux also continued to show strong demand,” said Acker Merrall and Condit Companies Chairman John Kapon. “The beginning of every auction year is always exciting in Hong Kong thanks to Chinese New Year, and the Hong Kong market continued to show why Acker Merrall is #1 in Hong Kong, and #1 in the World for the past decade.  We will kick things off in New York City on February 11th.  I can’t wait!”

Acker Merrall’s first New York City auction of 2017 will be held on February 11th at Marea. For more information, including appraisals and consignments please visit www.ackerwines.com.
